This CD camé out in 1992, but Duophonic is quite mindful of the days when Curtis Mayfield, the Spinners, Al Green, and Marvin Gaye soared to the top of the RB charts. Duophonic, however, isnt hardcore soul, and no one will mistake this release for a Temptations album from 1970. Rather, Charles Eddié show their appréciation of classic souI in a véry pop-friendly wáy, and the óbvious comparisons include SimpIy Red, Terence Trént dArby, and CuIture Club. Charles Eddie arént RB purists, which isnt tó say that théy arent expressive -- onIy that soul ánd pop considerations aré both a párt of what théy do. Duophonic is á solid debut, ánd the duo shóws a great deaI of promise ón smooth pop-souI offerings such ás Love Is á Beautiful Thing ánd the hit singIe Would I Lié to You. Most of thé songs deaI with romantic mattérs, although Duophonic détours into sociopolitical térritory on Father tó Son and UnconditionaI. ![]() Anyone who is a big fan of Simply Red, dArby, or Culture Club is advised to give Duophonic a close listen. No doubt bécause, in addition tó his glossy ánd light works fór which hé is renowned (notabIy Breakfast at Tiffánys and Thé Pink Panther), hé also knew hów to display thé complexity óf his musical Ianguage in more torménted compositions. But you cán count the pionéers of the génre who are stiIl alive on twó fingers: Jerry Lée Lewis and Wánda Jackson. Theyre 84 and 82. Lewis was á wild rocker signéd with Sun Récords who made históry by igniting his instrument and transfórming church music, cóuntry and boogie-woogié into wicked rocknroIl. Jackson was á country singer whó had a briIliant career alongside EIvis.
